Swimming

Ohope Beach is one of the safest surf beaches in the country. The large tidal area means the coast does not drop off steeply like many other beaches and the large expanse of white sands at low tide are a delight for walkers.
The best swimming can be found on the incoming tide during the warm summer months of December to March.

Extra security for bathers can be found at Mahy reserve at the bottom of Ohope hill where the volunteers and professional lifeguards are stationed during the summer. Lifeguards also patrol along the beach near the camping ground at port Ohope. All Ohope bathers appreciate the efforts of the Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club.

A hot summers day in the warm water of Ohope Beach is a most relaxing experience. Take your sun umbrella, boogie boards and lots of sun block, as you will burn quickly in most conditions.

Always watch the kids especially on boogie boards and remember no one has ever drowned swimming between the flags at Ohope Beach.
